Life is good when you're a kitten; you get to do anything you want, even if it's bothersome, and your family will just love you for being cute.

PRODUCTION INFO

Chi's Sweet Home began as a manga series created by Kanata Konami in 2004, which then became animated by studio Madhouse and started airing in spring 2008. A second season titled Chi's Sweet Home: Chi's New Address began airing in spring 2009. Both seasons were directed by Mitsuyuki Masuhara and each contain 104 episodes that consist of 3 minutes in length.

SUMMARY

Chi2.jpg

Chi's Sweet Home is about a baby kitten who lost her way when she was walking with her mother and siblings. She looks all around the area for her mother, but in the end, she gives up and lies helplessly in a park's grass. Soon, a little boy wanders toward her with his mother chasing after him. Youhei, as he is called, notices the lost kitten and his family decides to take her into their home, where she is named Chi. Now Chi is in a completely different environment from what she's used to, and she finds it all very exciting!

WHAT TO EXPECT

Chi3.jpg

Chi's Sweet Home may look like a children's show, but it's actually aimed at a seinen audience. Regardless, it's a great show for all ages and perfectly suitable for children. In fact, if you want your children to learn Japanese, I would recommend this as a great show for them to watch. The series has many heartwarming moments that are both happy and sad. It's not quite enough for an adult to cry over, but it is still sweet. There are plenty of laughs that cat owners will understand and relate to, so if you're a cat person, this title is great fun.

CHARACTERS

Chi4.jpg

Chi is a curious and naive kitten who has a knack for getting into trouble. She knows very little about the world, both at home and outside, and loves to go exploring. Each new object she sees is like a toy to Chi! Blackie, as Chi nicknamed him, is a large black cat she met while roaming around outside. Chi looks up to him as though he were a close relative that she can trust. Youhei is the son of Chi's new family. Like most children would, Youhei really likes to play with Chi. Youhei's parents simply known as "mom" and "dad", and Chi treats them like they really are his mother and father.

OPINIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS

I thought this was a fun title, if a little lacking from the short length of the episodes, but that can also be considered a good thing if you have little time to spend watching anime in a day. The artwork is unlike most other anime and stylised to have the feel of a children's book. It's pretty cute, but it's not overly detailed. The plot in general is cute, and Chi as a character is adorable! The trouble she gets into as a kitten is so accurate that any cat owner would recognise at least something she does from experience, which really gives the viewer a sense of understanding for the family that takes care of Chi. It's also so much fun to see the creator's ideas about what goes through a kitten's head while she does such things! For fans of Chi's Sweet Home, I recommend the anime Poyopoyo for another series of short-length episodes about a family that owns a cat, as well as the movie You Are Umasou, which is about a baby Ankylosaurus who is adopted by a Tyrannosaurus.
