Gravity Rush Game Review
PRODUCTION INFO
Release: Jun 12, 2012
Gravity Rush is a Action-Adventure game created for the Playstation Vita. The game was directed by Keiichiro Toyama and written by Nakoto Sato (Creator of the first Silent Hill).
GAMEPLAY
The main focus of the game is its gameplay mechanic of manipulating gravity, allowing unique movements and complete control of your character Kat. The gravity mechanics allow a player to fly through the air allowing them to walk on walls and perform attacks against enemies in the game. The Playstation Vita allows the player to use the touchpad and touchscreen for in-game moves, along with tilting the Vita to look around while in the air or for certain moves due to the Vita's Built in gyroscope. There are several sections to the city Hekseville (Much like the Grand Theft Auto series) that need to be unlocked during the story. This with the many optional side quests throughout the game makes it easy to still be entertained even after you have completed the main story. The game also has a level system in which you can upgrade your character's gravity gage or acquire new moves.
STORY
The game takes place in a floating city called Hekseville as you control Kat, a girl who has lost her memory. She then soon meets up with a mysterious cat which gives her the powers to control gravity. Her main focus from this point throughout the game is to protect the people of the city Hekseville threatened by monsters they called "Nevi". The game uses cutscenes in the style of cell shaded comics, which is pleasing on the eyes.
CHARACTERS
It seems like all the characters in the game are mysterious in some way. Our main character Kat starts off not remembering where she came from and immediately takes the role of protecting the city. The primary antagonist creatures "Nevi" never have the origin explained, so you never truly understand what they are there for. Kat is followed by Dusty, a black cat who is the source of Kat's powers. However, again, there is no backround story behind who or what Dusty is. This unfortunately is a lacking side to the story, seeming as if they wanted to keep the user questioning most of the game. However there are a few characters in which our main character Kat runs into that we get to know better, primarily the character Raven who like Kat, is a shifter (Controller of Gravity) with an animal companion. Raven early on can be considered a rival to Kat, who wishes to stop missing pieces of the city from being restored.
----
Pro:
+Complete control over your character and the gravity around her.
+Lots of Sidequests throughout the game
Con:
-Story leaves almost all questions unanswered.
-Combat quickly becomes repetitive
Final Vertict: 7/10
Final Thoughts: Gravity Rush was a unique and fun experience. However, storywise it answered almost nothing which can leave a player frustrated.
