Girl Friend BETA Anime Review

PRODUCTION INFO

Girl Friend BETA started off as a dating sim app for phones, which was developed by CyberAgent and published by Ameba. In October 2014, an anime was released by studio Silver Link and aired through the fall anime season.

STORY

Considering Girl Friend BETA's original release as a dating sim phone app, you can't really expect much of a story, can you? To be honest, that's a bit harsh towards dating sims, but it's true in Girl Friend BETA's case. There is no story. We only follow a bunch of random girls in this high school where guys are nowhere to be seen. Well, they show up sometimes, as extras, but it's not like they're trying to date any of these beautiful girls with sweet personalities or anything.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Expect moeblobs doing moeblob things. We follow a different girl in each episode, and they each have their own hobby or predicament. For example, in one episode, there is a girl who write stories, but when other classmates start to read her work, they start to demand a continuation. Inconsiderate as Hell.

MAIN CHARACTERS

There aren't really any main characters in Click and drag to movethis title. Every episode is all about a different girl, and they all pretty much have a totally separate personality. Well, there is one thing each girl has in common, and that's that they are nice and get along with everyone. Pretty unrealistic, but I suppose they were going for making everyone into the perfect girl to date for this title. The masochists must be sad that there's no tsundere, though.

Aside from the lack of any conflict in the school, I actually liked how they gave each girl a unique hobby to make them more noticeable. Kokomi Shiina is into baton twirling and gymnastics, Chloe, a French girl, is into Japanese culture, Akane Sakurai is into broadcasting, Erena Mochizuki is into taking pictures with her camera, and so on. It doesn't just make the girls appeal to a specific type of person, but it makes the show more interesting. It's like trying out each of the hobbies yourself and seeing it it sparks an interest in you.

OPINIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS

I know this makes me a total weeaboo but I actually sort of liked this show. I understand it's bad, but damn. The girls are cute and they do cute things. The art isn't too shabby either. It's pretty much eye candy and nothing else. There wasn't even much for comedy, which is unusual for this type of show. It pains me to do this (not really), but I'm going to rate this anime without any personal bias.

If you like this type of show, then you'd probably like shows like K-On!, A-Channel, Lucky Star, and slice-of-life shows that follow girls in general.
