Sleepy Impressions: The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan
The original anime for The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was animated by Kyoto Animation, as was season 2 and the movie. This time our animator is Satelight. The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan is a spin-off of the original light novel, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. In this show, we will see the average school life of Yuki and her classmates as they take place in the world of The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Yuki was always one of my favourite characters in the Haruhi Suzumiya franchise. Most of the time she has no personality, so when she does something like changing her look to remove her glasses for Kyon, it really stands out.
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya owed a lot of its appeal to Yuki, which is why we now have this spin-off anime. It actually began as a manga, which I intended to read, but never got the chance to before the anime was announced.
Without having read the manga, I walked into this blindfolded! Let's have a look.
The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan has no real plot besides that of The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, which everyone knows already from the film. That is a major lack of points! The art style is unique, but Kyoto Animation had a more crisp look to it and smoother animation. That's a bit of a waste, too.
As we learned from the movie/light novel, Yuki has feelings for Kyon in this world. That's majorly cute, and turns this series into somewhat of a one-sided romance... I guess we already know what becomes of it, though, so there's little point to it besides that it is cute.
There is some comedy, but it's pretty average, stale stuff. Nothing worth dragging you in, really.
I can only really see some big Haruhi Suzumiya fans being able to enjoy this title. It's not worth watching for typical anime fans.
