Sleepy Impressions: Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?
I didn't realise the light novel I picked up from the library a couple weeks ago was getting an anime this season... That's a bit of a coincidence, but I'm always slow with these things. (Sigh.)
Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?
I will abreviate that title to Dungeon for now.
It takes place in an RPG world named Orario, where gods interact with their people, and adventurers fight monsters in dungeons. Our protagonist, Bell Cranel, is a level one adventurer who wants to pick up girls in a dungeon. However, the method in which he falls in love is a bit backwards from how he imagined it would be. His jealous goddess, Hestia, hides the truth from Bell when his love brings him a new skill that greatly increases the rate of his growth.
To me, it seems like Dungeon is a title that jumped on the "video game" bandwagon. Ever since Sword Art Online became super popular, a lot of these types of stories have been popping up... Not that it's a bad thing! It just feels like a theme that will get old quickly if this continues.
Of course, if we get unique twists, this kind of story could still entertain. I felt that Dungeon provided that unique twist, with the main character's strange goal of picking up girls rather than seeking fame or fortune.
As for the characters, I thought the girls were interesting. Hestia is definitely a tsundere. Bell was a bit lacking in personality, but at least he showed signs of developing near the end. Aiz, the girl Bell fell in love with, is still a mystery as far as the anime goes. We know nothing about her, except that her guild has at least one big jerk in it.
To be honest, Bell's attitude of being okay with everything really irritated me. I hate characters that are impossibly nice to the point of having no feelings besides happiness. So, when Bell ran off and fought in the dungeon all night after being made fun of, I felt that was a major point for him. I hope that he will continue to show signs of having a personality. I suppose, he must have had love flutters after falling in love recently, and that could be why he was okay with everything else, but maybe I'm just being nice.
The artwork and the OST were pretty nice. I really loved the background music in this episode! I would download it and listen to it in my own time!
Overall, the characters are still very average for a male demographic, what with the female characters being the only interesting ones. The story is barely unique, but it does have a couple twists for its theme. There are memorable pieces to the episode, such as the comedy and the skill Bell gained when he fell in love. It could be better later on, but for now, this type of show can only be...
